Modernizing Municipalities for the Public Good
GPS fleet
management is improving city operations.
One
of the top
goals of any steadfast city official is to provide citizens with
the highest value and most effective delivery of crucial city services.
That's why forward thinking municipalities like the City of St.
Petersburg, FL have chosen GPS fleet management solutions to greatly
improve their efficiency, productivity and public accountability.
Improving
City Operations
Located on Florida's Gulf Coast, St. Petersburg is Florida's fourth
largest city with over 250,000 residents. It is also the gateway
to Florida's High Tech Corridor and the hub of one of the country's
most progressive regions for business. In keeping with its commitment
to modernization, the City of St. Petersburg wanted to obtain automatic
vehicle location (AVL) and travel report information for its fleets.
St.
Petersburg sought a GPS fleet management solution that would:
-
lower fuel costs
-
monitor vehicle speeds
-
increase
employee productivity
-
improve
asset safety and reduce liability
-
elevate
the delivery of service to the residents and public-at-large
St.
Petersburg wanted a special solution that would allow GPS fleet
management information to be gathered from various departments but
stored in one centralized database location. Furthermore, the city
wanted the creation of permission-based security that would enable
each department to view only those records relating to that department's
assigned vehicles. City managers, however, could be authorized to
view all data relating to all city vehicles.
FleetBoss's
industry-leading expertise and unique, consultative approach made
it a logical choice to meet St. Petersburg's needs. Consequently,
FleetBoss was selected to provide customized fleet management solutions
to help the City of St. Petersburg with its ultimate goal of achieving
a more efficient, productive and cost-effective delivery of services.
AVL
for Operational Improvement
In August 2002, St. Petersburg chose FleetBoss for the launch
of the city's GPS fleet management pilot program. All vehicles from
the city's Department of Leisure Services were equipped with FleetBoss
systems to monitor their location, driver performance and speeding.
In July 2003, the city upgraded to the networked Enterprise version
of FleetBoss's system to achieve advanced monitoring of the city's
vehicles from multiple municipal locations.
FleetBoss
also created a customized solution that allows St. Petersburg to
organize vehicles into distinctive groups by department. The city's
system administrator authorizes individual user-logins so city employees
may access one or more of these groups as needed for operational
oversight and management control.
Over
the next three years, FleetBoss GPS solutions will be installed
into hundreds of city vehicles, providing huge savings and superior
delivery of services to the citizens of St. Petersburg.
